New Fordway Cloud Intermediation Service available in G-Cloud 7

Today's G-Cloud 7 framework includes the new Cloud Intermediation Service (CIS) from managed cloud provider Fordway, which the company believes is the first service of its kind to be offered through the framework. It is available through the Digital Marketplace with all Fordway's other managed cloud services.

Fordway's CIS, which is available from today, has been developed in conjunction with both public and private sector clients after the company found that many organisations struggle to plan and manage their move to cloud while maintaining existing services in parallel. The new service helps organisations assess, plan, transform and migrate their infrastructure partly or completely to public cloud using agile project management, providing whatever combination of resources they need to support their in-house team at each stage of the transition.

CIS can include use of Fordway's own cloud services as an intermediate step to provide service stabilisation or transformation to support the transition. The company has strong relationships with public cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google, enabling it to provide a single point of contact to manage a transition irrespective of the target platforms.

Fordway has won a number of contracts through G-Cloud for organisations including the Skills Funding Agency, BIS and DECC, and also provides cloud services for many private sector organisations including one of the engineering consortia delivering key infrastructure projects for Crossrail.

"Most IT teams will only migrate their systems to cloud once, and it's a big step. For the sake of their organisation and their own careers it needs to be planned and delivered successfully, on time and within budget, without any surprises," says Richard Blanford, Fordway managing director. "Fordway have already done this many times for a variety of clients, so bring our experience and proven methodologies to help them plan for all eventualities. This minimises risk, gives clarity on costs, delivers a better result more quickly and ensures they obtain the expected benefits. We can provide as much or as little support as each organisation needs at each stage of their transition, complementing the skills of their in-house team."

Total G-Cloud spending to reach £1bn in 2016.

G-Cloud sales for July through to September 2015 were strong and came in just shy of £100m. With £806m transacted through the G-Cloud framework since its launch in April 2012 and the current trend of increasing public sector sales likely to continue, total spending can be anticipated to reach £1 billion by summer 2016.

The majority of total sales have been through Central Government with the remainder of spend attributed to other public sector bodies. What is evident from the breakdown (see graph below) is that Local Government is still slow to embrace the framework; as at the end of August 2015, spend by local government was just 5.9% of the total.

The village of Gumda before the earthquake
The village of Gumda before the earthquake

Following the devastation of the earthquake in Nepal, Fordway’s Mark Grubb had to do something to help. His son Alex, had only just returned from an Explorer Scouts expedition to install a water supply in the village of Gumda in the Gorka region. Gumda is close to the epicentre of the quake. Most of the population 1,300 lost their homes. Fortunately there were few fatalities.

Having participated in similar projects himself, Mark has first-hand experience of the rudimentary living conditions of the Nepali villagers who depend upon subsistence farming for survival in a country with little infrastructure. His main concern is that the future for these people looks desperate and bleak.
